Not every breast augmentation delivers lasting results. Capsular contracture, implant displacement, rupture, and breast implant illness (BII) are complications that may require revision surgery. Korea has become a destination for revision cases, offering experienced surgeons at significantly lower costs than Western countries.
Common Reasons for Revision Surgery
Capsular Contracture
The most common complication. Scar tissue forms around the implant and tightens, causing hardness, pain, and shape distortion. Graded from I (soft, normal) to IV (hard, painful, distorted). Grades III and IV typically require surgical correction.
Breast Implant Illness (BII)
A collection of systemic symptoms that some patients attribute to their implants, including chronic fatigue, joint pain, brain fog, and autoimmune-like symptoms. While the medical community is still studying the connection, many patients report dramatic symptom improvement after implant removal with total capsulectomy.
Implant Displacement or Rotation
Implants can shift from their original position, creating asymmetry or an unnatural appearance. Common with older implant types or after trauma.
Implant Rupture
Saline implants deflate noticeably, while silicone ruptures may be "silent" and detected only by MRI. Ruptured implants should be replaced.
Revision Surgical Options
- Total capsulectomy: Complete removal of the capsule and implant as one unit. Gold standard for capsular contracture and BII ($5,000 - $8,000)
- Capsulectomy + implant exchange: Remove old capsule and replace with new implant ($6,000 - $10,000)
- Pocket adjustment: Repositioning the implant pocket for better placement ($4,000 - $7,000)
- Explant only (removal without replacement): For patients choosing to remove implants entirely ($3,000 - $6,000)
Recovery After Revision
- Week 1: More swelling than primary surgery; drain management
- Week 2-3: Swelling significantly reduced; stitches removed
- Week 6: Most swelling gone; shape improving
- Month 6-12: Full healing including softness, sensation return, and scar fading
