Korean skincare features ingredients you may not find in Western products. This encyclopedia covers the most important K-beauty ingredients, what they do, and who should use them.

A-C: Foundation Ingredients

  • Adenosine: Anti-wrinkle ingredient approved by Korean FDA. Boosts collagen synthesis and improves skin elasticity. Safe for all skin types.
  • Bee Venom: Mimics a bee sting to stimulate collagen production and tighten skin. Popular in anti-aging products. Avoid if allergic to bee stings.
  • Beta-Glucan: Polysaccharide with powerful hydrating and soothing properties. Gentler alternative to hyaluronic acid. Excellent for sensitive skin.
  • Centella Asiatica (Cica): Korean skincare's hero ingredient. Anti-inflammatory, wound healing, and barrier repair. Found in toners, serums, and creams. Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive and acne-prone.
  • Ceramides: Lipid molecules that form the skin barrier. Essential for moisture retention and protection. Must-have for dry, dehydrated, or barrier-compromised skin.

E-G: Active Ingredients

  • EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor): Protein that accelerates cell renewal and wound healing. Clinic-grade ingredient now in premium serums. Best for anti-aging and post-treatment recovery.
  • Fermented Ingredients: Fermentation breaks down molecules for better absorption. Common examples: fermented rice, soy, and galactomyces. Brightening and anti-aging benefits.
  • Galactomyces: Yeast ferment filtrate that brightens, hydrates, and refines pores. Made famous by SK-II but available in affordable Korean alternatives.
  • Ginseng: Korea's signature ingredient. Rich in ginsenosides that boost collagen, improve elasticity, and provide antioxidant protection. Especially effective in anti-aging formulations.
  • Green Tea: Powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. Contains EGCG that protects against UV damage. Suitable for oily and acne-prone skin.

H-M: Hydration & Healing

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Holds 1000x its weight in water. Multiple molecular weights penetrate different skin layers. Foundation of Korean hydration layering.
  • Honey/Propolis: Natural humectant with antibacterial properties. Propolis is especially effective for acne-prone skin while providing hydration.
  • Madecassoside: Specific compound from centella. More potent anti-inflammatory than raw centella extract. Premium calming ingredient.
  • Mugwort (Ssuk): Traditional Korean herb with anti-inflammatory and calming properties. Popular for sensitive and irritated skin.

N-R: Treatment Actives

  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Multi-tasking ingredient that reduces pores, brightens, strengthens barrier, and controls oil. Effective at 2-5% concentration. Works with almost every other ingredient.
  • PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide): Salmon DNA-derived ingredient for cell regeneration. Available in injectable (Rejuran) and topical forms. The hottest ingredient of 2025-2026.
  • Peptides: Short chains of amino acids that signal skin to produce more collagen. Multiple types target different concerns (copper peptides, palmitoyl peptides).
  • Rice Extract: Traditional Korean brightening ingredient. Contains ferulic acid, vitamins B and E, and natural AHAs. Gentle enough for sensitive skin.
  • Retinol: Vitamin A derivative for anti-aging. Korean formulations tend to be gentler with encapsulated delivery systems.

S-Z: Specialty Ingredients

  • Snail Mucin: Glycoprotein-rich secretion with hydrating, healing, and anti-aging properties. Contains glycolic acid, elastin, and hyaluronic acid naturally. K-beauty's most iconic unique ingredient.
  • Squalane: Lightweight oil that mimics skin's natural sebum. Non-comedogenic moisturizer suitable for all skin types including oily.
  • Tea Tree: Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory essential oil. Effective for acne treatment at 5% or lower concentration.
  • Tranexamic Acid: Pharmaceutical-turned-skincare ingredient for hyperpigmentation. Inhibits melanin production. Effective for melasma and dark spots.
  • Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid): Antioxidant that brightens, protects from UV, and boosts collagen. Korean serums often use stabilized forms for longer shelf life.
